Outstanding Alumna 2024

Connie Long

For her entire adult life Connie Long has been devoted to Gamma Phi Beta, Greek life, her church and her community. One of our Gamma Phi sisters said that Connie is “the glue that holds our alumnae chapter together. “Through her long dedication to so many groups Connie has shown herself to be the glue that holds a community together. At a time when many organizations are struggling to remain active and relevant, Philadelphia Area Alumnae Panhellenic celebrates the women who are the glue that holds us together. Connie Long is one of those women. For more than 15 years, Connie has been president of the Gamma Phi Beta Philadelphia West Suburban Alumnae Chapter. In that time, she has planned events and organized activities that strengthened not only her local chapter but her national sorority by keeping alumnae involved with Greek life. As president, she has supported her sisters in both good and difficult times. Whether celebrating a special event or visiting an older member who can no longer leave her home, Connie has always been there for the Gamma Phis. She is the group’s cheerleader, promoting her sisters and celebrating their accomplishments. Even through a pandemic, she kept the Gamma Phi sisters engaged with on-line meetings and outdoor gatherings. Thanks to Connie, their chapter is strong. Connie has been dedicated to promoting the value of sorority life beyond the college years. At collegiate chapters, she organized “Senior Celebrations” to welcome graduating seniors into alumnae status, and she presented programs on the importance of remaining involved after graduation. She assisted with recruitment, guided new members through initiation and welcomed recent graduates to her alumnae group. For years, Connie also has been involved with Philadelphia Area Alumnae Panhellenic (PAAP). She served as president in 1986-87. Even though she is not her chapter’s official representative, she regularly attends meetings, and last year, she served as PAAP’s Scholarship Chair. Connie has also dedicated her time and talent to her church, serving as a Sunday school teacher for 20 years, a vacation bible school teacher for 10 years, a lay leader, a worship leader, and a finance committee member—and these are only some of her activities at church. In her community, she has been actively involved in her homeowners’ association for 25 years, serving on the board and on multiple committees. A life-long member of the Penn State Alumni Association, she is active with the Chester County chapter and each year helps with the “Senior Send-Off” ice cream social for high school seniors heading to Penn State. Connie has worked hard to balance devotion to family, faith, her sorority, and our community. What is especially impressive is that Connie has managed to do all this while raising two children as a single mother. Sadly, Connie passed away suddenly in January.

A Memorial Scholarship Fund has been set up in Connie's name.
